Grounds Maintenance and Projects Update

Our grounds team are dedicated to maintaining our cemetery grounds so they look their best at all times throughout the year. Our maintenance schedule includes year-round tasks such as lawn mowing, brush cutting and removal of weeds, as well as seasonal activities such as pruning and planting. Projects to improve cemetery grounds and infrastructure occur throughout the year.

March – April 2021

Above average rainfall resulting in stronger vegetation growth continues to be challenging as we move from Summer into Autumn.

Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium

  • Ongoing lawn maintenance and brush cutting
  • Ongoing spraying and removal of weeds
  • Ongoing gardens maintenance for pruning, hedging weed and pest control
  • Pruning of camellias to be completed in March/April
  • Roses will receive their summer prune
  • Agapanthus dead heading has commenced
  • Stage 1 of new family ash estates garden Gardenia Grove has been completed – plantings to be complete pending delivery of rocks
  • Living Legacy planting season to start late March
  • Ongoing grave repairs due to wet weather
  • New beams on Ascension Hill have been completed
  • Grave beam extensions have been completed and turfing is currently scheduled
  • New Family Bush rock estate sites are available for ash placement
  • Tree risk works currently in progress
  • Construction of Mausoleum of The Holy Way is ongoing, completion scheduled late 2021

Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery

  • Seeding of the Coreopsis has finished and they have now been cut down to grave height
  • Watsonias and other flowering plants will also be cut back once the seasonal flowering ends
  • Monthly spraying of the brick pathways to remove weeds
  • Monthly brush cutting
  • Ongoing lawn maintenance
  • Weekly clearing and blowing of pathways and emptying of bins
  • Turfing of the Carriage way to commence in coming months
  • Tree risk works currently in progress
  • Kiss and ride drop off zone at the school is under construction
  • Friends of Gore Hill Cemetery are meeting on Friday 5 March
  • Clean Up Australia Day will be doing their annual clean up of the cemetery on Sunday 7 March – all volunteers are welcome to attend. https://nmclm.com.au/events/clean-up-australia-day-2021/

Field of Mars Cemetery

  • Ongoing lawn maintenance and brush cutting
  • Ongoing spraying and removal of weeds
  • Beautification works to Lawn 8 including a new Armenian section  have been completed
  • Construction of Sacred Crypts of Our Lady is scheduled for completion in early March
  • New roadway to Upper Greek area will be completed in March
  • Tree risk works currently in progress
  • Signage is being progressively upgraded
  • Agapanthus deadheading has commenced

Frenchs Forest Bushland Cemetery

  • Ongoing lawn maintenance and brush cutting
  • Ongoing spraying and removal of weeds (weather permitting)
  • Pruning of azaleas in grave sites mostly completed, with weeding continuing
  • Improvement works to General Lawn including remediation of retaining wall and pathway and extension of lawn grave area is progressing. The retaining wall has been completed and backfilling will start this week. Once the filling is completed, the new path and stairs will be done. – For more information, click here
  • Upgrade of underground drainage line off Coonangurra Circuit has been completed. Turf is likely to be laid by the end of February – For more information, click here
  • Construction of new monument acknowledging the Armenian genocide to commence in March – For more information, click here
  • Development of natural burial area off Melaleuca Parade to commence in March – For more information, click here

Sandgate Cemetery

  • Ongoing lawn maintenance and brush cutting
  • Ongoing spraying and removal of weeds
  • Clean up following storm on 16 November 2020 which caused extensive damage to trees is nearing completion with stump grinding now being completed
  • Checking and replacement of roof tiles at the Lynch Gate for Anglican 3 will commence in March
  • Discussions with Newcastle Council have been instigated for work to the Presbyterian shelter
  • Perimeter fencing damaged by storm will be replaced by 30 June
  • Potholes throughout the cemetery including the Lawn access road have been repaired, with further road improvements planned for 2021
  • Crypt chapel ceiling, dome and walls have been washed
