Story of Place – Macquarie Park

Dennis Foley, Gai-mariagal Elder, Knowledge Holder

Macquarie Park Cemetery was once an open forest and the homeland of the Wallamatta people, the western clan of the Gai-mariagal.  It was a place of traditional ceremony and considered consecrated ground, so it was no surprise to Dennis Foley that its ultimate use was as a cemetery.  Originally a place of people of High Degree, the site connects up to other important sites in the region.  Dennis Foley remembers running around the bushlands as a child, and today Macquarie Park as he describes is a place that he feels at home in.
